FIRST HAND™

Chart (above) and hand drawings ©1994, 1996 Stan Tenen — Upper body postures courtesy Karen Ann CartyFrom Mr. Tenen's description of the first published version of this chart, from TORUS, the Journal of the Meru Foundation, Vol. 2, #4, page 20:

The model and letter-shapes in the chart below are carefully hand-drawn tracings of shadowgrams of one physical model right hand. The hands shown holding the model hand are an attempt to show what a right hand looks like – from the point-of-view of a person wearing the model on their own hand. In a few cases there are minor distortions in the drawings to enhance their clarity. In other cases there are distortions and inconsistencies due to my lack of artistic ability.

Since it is our objective to show enough of the gesture for each letter for it to be identified by the reader and to define a pointing direction and orientation for each letter, these inaccuracies should not be a problem. Likewise, some letters are truncated (or otherwise simplified) views of the whole model. These partial views are fully usable as long as they are sufficient to specify the particular pointing direction for each gesture.

The Hebrew Letters

The Three-Level Matrix of Meaning

Each letter has its own "page" in this section, as in the pictorial index printed below. In each case, we start with the letter-meaning, with examples, as defined by the Matrix of Meaning. Next, where available, is a poster including a representation of that letter generated as a view of the Meru Foundation FIRST HAND™ Hebrew Flame-Letter sculpture, both in a tetrahedral frame (Meru Foundation's original copyright design, which we call The Light in the Meeting Tent), and free-standing, with demonstrations of the posture used to view that letter. (A thumbnail in the index indicates that a poster is available.) Finally, any additional thoughts on each letter by Stan Tenen are included at the end of each letter's page.

Images on these pages, and on the letter-posters, are ©1986, 1995, and 1996 Stan Tenen and James Fournier. Body postures courtesy of Karen Ann Carty.

Hebrew letters printed in the thumbnails below are Meruba Ashurit Rabbinic Hebrew letters, generated entirely from Meru Foundation's copyright FIRST HAND™ Hebrew Flame-Letter vortex sculpture. This font is copyright to Stan Tenen.
